Cellular Biology I chose to explain cellular biology because it is a scientific discipline which describes a cells life cycle. The key point I will be talking about in this report it Cell Division. The cell cycle is also important as it regulates how long they live. Cells die due to suffering injuries or damage which can’t be repaired. Cells are damaged or injured as they function which causes mitosis, which is cell division. While studying cellular biology we were given the example: If you travel to a part of the world where you were exposed to change in altitude, the rate of mitosis in your blood cells would increase. This is important because in real life your cells would be dividing at a faster rate and unlike plants we can’t alter our rates of mitosis. http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/index.html The website about is good at listing the key point because it is clear to read, there are visible pictures, and everything is listed so your not bored from reading paragraphs. Almost all the text is defined and relates the word or topic. For example it gives the definition of structures like a chromosome in point form which is easy to read and clear to understand. Example: Chromosomes – Usually in the form of chromatin – Contains genetic information – Composed of DNA – Thicken for cellular division – Set number per species (i.e. 23 pairs for human) This site is so special to the topic because it is able to offer correct information and descriptions towards cellular biology and the process which occurs. This is a useful way of enduring learning because the site shows uses of different sources rather then just text. They give you links and pictures with descriptions to better your understanding. This site talks about the differences between Meiosis and Mitosis. There are many definitions listed for easier understanding of the terms used to describe the processes. http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/cell_division.aspx I looked up Cell Biology on encyclopedia.com. It gave me a list of topics to do with it so I chose cell division since that was talked about the most in class. This website is good at describing the key points because it uses a variety of methods to describe the stages in cell division. There are links to diagrams of cell images, cell theory and animal or plant cells on Google. On the sides of the webpage you can go to the related topics which have pictures of the Meiosis and Mitosis process. This helps your understanding because it shows the steps, for example: Interphase cell Mitosis Cytokinesis, also it’s including definitions to show you the step by step process of cell division. This website is useful for this type of learning because it is from an encyclopedia based site which provide accurate information. The information is easily readable for quick readers, and in a format that’s understandable. The book “Cell Division & Genetics,” By: Robert Snedden is a great resource for the Cell Division part of Cell Biology. This book has 6 chapters on the cell cycles, reproduction, development, DNA and inheritance, which are key to cell division. The section on Cell Cycle explains the tow parts of cell division which are mitosis and cytokinesis. This book shows information on Cell splitting through Animal and Plant Divisions, as well as other information on cell division that’s new to me. Yes, this book includes charts, pedigrees and pictures which help our learning. They each have there own way of including a brief description whether its definition or paragraph form. The nice thing about these descriptions are that they are mostly factual with numbers and recently studied information. These pictures and graphs benefit our learning by using true information which is essential to the cell division process.
