Heart Bypass Story Culminating Story

Maxwell’s Story
Life Can Change In a Split Second
One day, 32 year old Maxwell Durault was barbequing hamburgers while enjoying the hot summer weather. He had recently experienced chest pains only a week prior. Being the easy going type of person, and not one to complain, he didn’t tell anyone. While barbequing he felt a very sharp pain and called his wife for help. She rushed him to the hospital where he was given full tests for a person with these complaints. His cardio gram and blood work revealed he had taken a heart attack. Further testing would reveal how much damage had been done to the heart and what the next step was.
Maxwell was in a lot of pain and on heavy medications. Little did he do know he was a candidate for a triple heart bypass. He was prepped for surgery, the following day and by 10pm in the intensive care unit in recovery. He had a slow recovery, but eventually got to go home 1 month later. Given changes he would need to follow in order to have a healthier life style.
The Heart is one of the most important parts of your body. It is where your blood is pumped through your entire body. It is a continuous process. The triple heart bypass would be because the arteries were clogged which was straining the heart.

Website Review #2 on Fungi

What Is Fungi?
By: Kelly Schweyer
The Tree of Life Web Project website was designed by researchers from multiple universities throughout the U.S.A to show studies on Fungi. In this website you can find the Characteristics, Fossil records, Biogeography’s, and the discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships. Fungi are our most important plant pathogens. Rather than requiring a stomach to accomplish digestion, fungi live in their own food supply and simply grow into new food as the local environment becomes nutrient depleted.
Fungi are decomposers because they live off there own food supplies as well as grow into new food. This is a healthy way to save the environment by recycling. By reading this website instead of a book we are also reducing the use of paper.
This website discusses Fungi in a more professional approach to learning. There are pictures of microscopic views probably found by the university these researchers study at. They have descriptive captions relating to the text and the website has a fairly easy format. This website lacks the ability to have a glossary on hand for unknown words which can make it difficult as a reader. The text is all related to Fungi at some point in its development. As a reader, Fungi is easy to understand when the information is all related to the same topic.
This website is a good learning tool because it gives more of an academic approach to Fungi as a pose to a practical version with lots of pictures and less information. Understanding the topic was not hard because the information was really basic. The pictures and research were very helpful to me because they showed the website had fact to offer and it wasn’t just made up. I would recommend this website to any young adult interested in Microbiology because it offers helpful information which could potentially lead to more advances in research.

Website Review on Fungi

Website/ Book Review

The Fungi Kingdom, By: Barbara Liang discusses the common characteristics of fungi. Fungi live everywhere, some are microscopic and extend for more than a thousand acres. Research shows that fungi are more related to the animal kingdom then the plant kingdom.

Did you know Fungi can reproduce asexually as well as sexually? The sexual life cycle of fungi is different from all other eukaryotic organisms in that the zygote is the only diploid cell. The coexistence of two different mating types of nuclei is the dikaryotic stage, which is unique to fungi. In my opinion this website basically represents a book. It has a very easy format and the text is the right size to read. The website has visuals and charts to explain certain parts of the characteristics of fungi.

In my opinion this website was essential for enduring learning because it provides accurate information in a format in which everyone can understand. The illustrations and descriptions of fungi in this website represent the topic so its understandable to all readers. I would recommend this website to anyone interested in Fungi or needing information on the topic. For more information go to: http://www.wisc-online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=bio304

Book Review on Fungi

Facts on Fungi
The Diversity of Life, By: Robert Snedden discusses how fossil evidence shows that fungi first appeared about 600 million years ago and about 100 million years ago the three great groups of fungi were established: the zygoycetes (molds), sac fungi (such as truffles), and the club fungi (mushrooms and toadstools).

Did you know fungi are eukaryotes, one of the two basic types of living cell?

This means all plants, have cell walls. The fungal cell contains cellulose just like the plant cells but they also contain a carbohydrate called Chitin which plant cells do not have. This is the outer material found in the hard outer skeletons of insects and spiders.

In my opinion this book is able to discuss Microbiology in an easy to read format. There are illustrations on every page, which attract reader’s attention and include captions for easy understanding. I would recommend this book to students needing information for classes, projects and general science classes. The bolded words indicate that they can be defined in the glossary, which is very helpful. Included is a easy to use glossary and index.

The Diversity of Life was a good learning source and I am glad I could find a key point like Fungi to represent part of the Microbiology explained throughout the book. As a reader I found the text and general level of the book easy to understand the subject. Any teenager or adult could read this book and benefit from learning with no problem. I am glad I had the chance to read this book.
